About Sara
Based in Brooklyn, New York, Sara has photographed vineyards, wineries, and wine communities throughout the U.S., Europe and South America. Her specialty has been helping wine companies define and establish their unique "visual identity." For more than 30 years, the wine industry has sought out her artistic eye, and uses her images for advertising, marketing, and public relations.
Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Sara earned her Bachelors of Science in Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she spent her senior year studying abroad at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.
Sara started her work as a wine photographer in 1986, when she and her husband, Thomas Matthews, moved from New York City to Ruch, a small wine village near Bordeaux, France. Their book, "A Village in the Vineyards", was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1993. Since then, she has done seven more books about wine regions in Long Island, Chile, Argentina and Washington State. Sara has also had over a dozen exhibitions of her work, in many countries.
Sara went fully digital in 2005, and in 2016, she added video and drone capabilities to her toolkit, getting her drone pilot license from the Federal Aviation Administration. In 2011 she received her Certificate in Horticulture from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. This knowledge informed her work in the vineyards.
In 2023, Sara retired from her photography career, to enjoy a new phase in life, along with her husband, Thomas. She continues to post images of her life and travels on Instagram, at sarainbrooklyn.
