"Text is clearly secondary here; the real stars of the show are the thoughtful, intimate and revealing photographs, which portray, better than any book to date, a Washington wine industry that is every bit as beautiful and artistic as that large state to the south."
"If your eye is jaded, when you've seen one winery and vineyard, you've seen them all. But if your eye is Sara Matthews', even if you've seen hundreds, you don't tire of seeing each one individually and freshly. Her acute eye is the camera, guided by an artist's imagination."
"At the end of the day, good wine is about place. It's about the characteristics of the soil where the vines are planted. It's about temperature, sunlight, the lay of the land, how much rain falls and when it falls. The land also forms the people living there. Distinctive places attract a specific type of individual whose methods of grape growing and winemaking are informed by the land, creating traditions that further contribute to a wine's sense of place. Europeans have always understood this. We Americans have had to learn it. The French call this notion terroir and to the vignerons there it is a religion. Some think that Washington is too young a wine region to have developed a significant sense of place, but I think they're wrong. True, we have not mapped the nuances of all of the best vineyard sites as the French have, and we lack their singular culture, but we understand the uniqueness of our land and are collectively driven by the goal of making quality wines. Photographer Sara Matthews understands just what it is about this place and its people that make it viticulturally special. In her new book "Washington: the State of Wine" (Graphic Arts Books, 112 pages) she makes her case with scenes that are sometimes dramatic (aerial shots of vineyards) and sometimes mundane (a dog sleeping in the sun). Matthews is an accomplished photographer, having done similar books on many of the world's major wine regions. In this book her artist's eye edits the landscape until only the important and the essential remain. In the chapter titled "Missoula Floods" she is most impressive. These floods of biblical proportions raced through Eastern Washington some 10,000 years ago, scouring and carving the land and depositing and removing soil, which virtually created our opportunity to grow great wines. The evidence of these events and their sheer enormity are made dramatically clear in Matthews' pictures. This is a book of photographs, not a tome on the Washington wine industry. Matthews includes just enough text -- mostly quotes from her subjects -- to keep the reader lingering on each page. If this book doesn't make you want to take to the road and explore our wine country, then perhaps nothing will."
