biography

Sara Matthews specializes in wine photography, working with magazines and companies associated with the wine industry. Her photographs have been published in many books and publications, including Food & Wine, Newsweek, The New York Times, Saveur, USA Today, and Wine Spectator. She has had solo exhibitions of her photography in France and Argentina.

Sara started her work as a wine photographer in 1986, when she and her husband, Thomas Matthews, moved from New York to a small wine village near Bordeaux, France. Their book, A Village in the Vineyards, was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1993. Since then, she has photographed six more books about wine.

Sara works with 12 and 16 megapixel digital cameras by Canon. She prefers to work with natural light whenever possible, supplementing when necessary with portable lighting equipment

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Sara attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she earned a bachelor of science in architecture in 1982. She spent her fourth-year study-abroad program at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, where she discovered the wonderful world of gourmet food and wine.
